Oyster - Your Regex IDE App Reviews
Unusable
you cannot even input image links as regex test text as it will try to display the images hahahaha this app is the worst regex app I’ve ever seen
Nice idea but I have purchased to search regex inside HTML files. And that doesn’t work or specifically Preview Window is mixing search result with attempts to Preview them (as HTML) adding some tags and modifying results on-the-fly. Cannot switch off this feature so the final result is unusable gibberish. Send question to support and no answer after weeks.
Ive been using Oyster for a few days now and its already saved me a ton of time. If you spend ANY time dealing with regular expressions in any form, save yourself the headache and buy this. Itll pay for itself in days.
Ive used a few of these kind of apps (RegExhibit, RegExRX, etc) and this is probably the worst value for the money. The whole app is a clunky UX nightmare. Its got a ton of features that are unclear how to use and provide little feed back. Even simple things like determining if a regex valid arent obvious. The color changes but is the bright color valid or invaid? Whats the language selection supposed to do? It doesnt seem to matter what you pick so it comes off like a gimic… Is it copying to the clipboard? Syntax highlighting? Ive got no idea and theres no feedback. The tests bit could be useful as a way to track test cases but they dont take the step of letting you see the effect of changes wihtout selecting each one.
Thanks Core Intuition
Bought this app after hearing about it on Core Intuition. It does what its supposed to and will definitely save you time.
This app is a great idea, but the implementation has plenty of room for improvement. I often found myself frustrated because long or complicated patterns can take some time to compute and there is little in the UI that lets me know that something is happening, but the cursor is unresponsive and eventually the mouse goes “beachball”. There is a comprehensive RegEx dictionary in the app, and its well orgainized, but I wish it was easier to use. I know this seems like a petty gripe, but the icon is particularly ugly. There are many great ways to render oyster but it seems like the author went out of his or her way to pick the worst one. The app hasn’t crashed on me, yet.
I can’t give it 5 stars because the delete library button has causted me to lose hours of work. It’s in a HORRIBLE spot and there’s no confirmation! Also, why doesn’t the app tell you how many hits you have? Odd. Good job on it in general but some obvious things have been overlooked in my opinion.
Id love to use this app more, but 90% of my regex needs revolve around created named groups, which do not appear to work in this application. The help documentation shows how to do a named group, but my regex completely breaks when they are implemented. Same regexes work fine in Patterns.
